Welcome to Eureka Brake & Automotive

A Legacy of Excellence in Humboldt County

Eureka Brake & Automotive has been a cornerstone of auto repair in Humboldt County, built on the vision of Steve Cunningham, a third-generation automotive technician. Inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of his father and grandfather, Steve’s passion for cars and community began at a young age. In 1988, at just 23 years old, he turned that passion into reality by purchasing a modest two-bay shop on the corner of 2nd and U Street. Over the past three decades, that humble shop has grown into a bustling 12-bay facility, symbolizing dedication, quality, and community.

From Humble Beginnings to Industry Expertise

Steve’s journey in the automotive industry started as a teenager working in his parents’ shop, performing simple tasks like cleaning tools and floors. His dedication led him to become a certified technician and eventually a shop manager. With these skills, Steve founded Eureka Brake & Automotive, applying his technical expertise and business acumen to create a shop that set a standard for professionalism and care. This foundation continues to inspire the team today.

A Family Tradition: The Heart of Eureka Brake & Automotive

Since its inception, Eureka Brake & Automotive has been a family affair. Steve and Lacee Cunningham, who married in 1990, worked tirelessly to grow the business. Lacee’s expertise in operations and customer service complemented Steve’s technical background, creating a thriving family-owned enterprise. Their daughters were actively involved in the shop, learning the ropes of the family trade. In 2022, Steve and Lacee passed the torch to their daughter Mallory and her husband Shane Finley, ensuring the family legacy would continue. Mallory grew up immersed in the shop, working in the office after college. Today, she balances her role as a real estate agent with overseeing accounting and operations for the business. Shane, a former welder, transitioned seamlessly into managing the shop alongside Mallory. Together, they are raising their two children, Marley and Beau, while upholding the values of quality and community that define Eureka Brake & Automotive. Steve and Lacee remain connected to the business, occasionally visiting to share their wisdom and reconnect with the team.

Committed to Excellence and Community

Eureka Brake & Automotive’s commitment to excellence extends far beyond its shop walls. Under Steve and Lacee’s leadership, the shop actively supported career development in the automotive industry. Steve served as an advisor to the Eureka High School Automotive Department and a board member for the College of the Redwoods Automotive Department, while Lacee contributed to WECARE, a council promoting career opportunities in the field.

Today, under Shane and Mallory’s leadership, that tradition continues with a renewed focus on nurturing aspiring technicians and giving back to the Humboldt County community. With a foundation built on family values and community connections, Eureka Brake & Automotive remains a trusted name for exceptional service, creating a welcoming environment for both customers and employees alike.

Car Care Chronicles: Maintenance & Repair Tips From our Expert Mechanics

By Shane Finley September 29, 2025
In today's economy, getting the most from your vehicle investment makes more sense than ever. While the average car payment continues to climb, smart Eureka drivers are discovering that proper maintenance can extend their vehicle's life well beyond 200,000 miles. Eureka's unique coastal environment presents both challenges and opportunities for vehicle longevity – the mild temperatures are easier on engines, but salt air and moisture require extra attention to prevent premature wear and corrosion. Why Vehicle Longevity Matters More in Eureka Economic Benefits With limited public transportation options and the need to travel Highway 101 for many services, Eureka residents depend heavily on reliable personal vehicles. Extending your car's life means avoiding expensive car payments and maintaining transportation freedom in a region where distances between services can be significant. Environmental Impact Keeping your current vehicle running longer reduces environmental impact compared to manufacturing new cars. In a community that values environmental stewardship like Eureka, this approach aligns with local values while saving money. Local Driving Advantages Eureka's relatively mild climate and lack of road salt (compared to snowy regions) creates favorable conditions for vehicle longevity when combined with proper maintenance practices. The Foundation: Regular Oil Changes Why Oil Changes Matter More Here Eureka's coastal humidity can introduce moisture into engine oil over time. Regular oil changes remove this contamination before it causes internal engine damage. Short trips around town, common in Eureka's compact layout, don't allow engines to reach full operating temperature, making frequent oil changes even more critical. Optimal Change Intervals Follow your manufacturer's severe service schedule if you primarily drive short distances, experience frequent stop-and-go traffic, or drive in dusty conditions. For most Eureka drivers, this means oil changes every 3,000-5,000 miles rather than extended intervals. Quality Matters Use oil that meets your vehicle's specifications. Modern engines require specific oil formulations, and using the correct grade protects internal components from premature wear. Cooling System Maintenance Salt Air Challenges Eureka's coastal location exposes vehicles to salt-laden air that can accelerate corrosion in cooling systems. Regular coolant changes and system flushes remove corrosive contaminants before they damage expensive components like radiators and water pumps. Temperature Regulation Even in Eureka's mild climate, proper cooling system maintenance prevents overheating during summer Highway 101 travel or when climbing hills around Humboldt County. Overheating can destroy an engine in minutes, ending your vehicle's life prematurely. Preventive Replacement Replace thermostats, water pumps, and hoses before they fail. These components have predictable lifespans, and replacing them during scheduled maintenance costs far less than emergency roadside repairs. Brake System Longevity Coastal Driving Benefits Eureka's relatively flat terrain and moderate traffic reduce brake wear compared to mountainous or heavily congested areas. However, salt air can accelerate brake component corrosion if not properly maintained. Regular Inspections Have brakes inspected every 12,000 miles or annually. Early detection of worn pads prevents damage to expensive rotors and other brake components. Replacing brake pads costs hundreds of dollars less than replacing damaged rotors and calipers. Fluid Maintenance Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, especially in humid coastal environments. Regular brake fluid changes prevent internal corrosion and maintain proper braking performance throughout your vehicle's life. Transmission Care for Longevity Highway 101 Benefits Regular highway driving on Highway 101 actually benefits automatic transmissions by allowing them to operate in higher gears with less heat generation compared to constant city stop-and-go driving. Scheduled Service Follow manufacturer recommendations for transmission fluid changes. Modern transmissions are complex and expensive to rebuild, but proper fluid maintenance can help them last the vehicle's lifetime. Warning Sign Recognition Address transmission problems immediately. Small issues like minor fluid leaks can become major failures if ignored, potentially totaling an otherwise serviceable vehicle. Tire Maintenance and Alignment Even Wear Patterns Regular tire rotation and proper alignment ensure even wear, maximizing tire life and maintaining safe handling. Eureka's wet weather conditions make proper tire maintenance crucial for safety and longevity. Pressure Monitoring Check tire pressure monthly, especially during seasonal temperature changes. Proper inflation extends tire life and improves fuel economy, saving money over your vehicle's lifetime. Quality Investment Choose quality tires appropriate for Eureka's climate. Good tires last longer and provide better safety margins during wet weather driving common in the region. Battery and Electrical System Coastal Climate Effects Salt air can accelerate battery terminal corrosion. Regular cleaning and inspection prevent electrical problems that could strand you or damage expensive electronic components. Proactive Replacement Replace batteries every 3-4 years, before they fail completely. Dead batteries can damage alternators and other charging system components, creating cascading repair costs. Preventive Maintenance Schedule Monthly Checks Fluid levels (oil, coolant, brake, power steering, windshield washer) Tire pressure and visual tire inspection Battery terminals and belt condition Light function (headlights, taillights, signals) Quarterly Maintenance Oil and filter changes (adjust based on driving conditions) Detailed visual inspection under hood and underneath vehicle Wiper blade condition and washer fluid top-off Annual Services Brake inspection and fluid change Coolant system service Transmission service (if due) Belt and hose replacement as needed Professional multi-point inspection The Cost-Benefit Analysis Maintenance vs. Replacement Annual maintenance costs typically range from $1,000-2,000, while a new car payment averages $400-600 monthly. Over ten years, maintenance costs significantly less than constant car payments while providing reliable transportation. Resale Value Protection Well-maintained vehicles retain higher resale values. Complete maintenance records demonstrate care and can add thousands to your vehicle's worth when it's time to sell or trade. Local Service Advantages Relationship Building Working with a local Eureka shop allows technicians to become familiar with your vehicle's history and specific needs. This relationship often leads to better service and early problem detection. Climate Expertise Local shops understand Eureka's specific challenges like salt air corrosion and humidity effects. This knowledge helps them recommend appropriate maintenance intervals and services for local conditions. Modern Vehicle Capabilities Today's vehicles are engineered to last 200,000+ miles with proper maintenance. Advanced materials, better lubricants, and improved manufacturing quality make vehicle longevity more achievable than ever before. Creating Your Maintenance Plan Manufacturer Guidelines Start with your owner's manual recommendations, then adjust for local conditions and driving patterns. Eureka's coastal environment and typical driving conditions may require more frequent service for some components. Budget Planning Spread maintenance costs throughout the year by planning ahead. This approach prevents large unexpected expenses and ensures consistent vehicle care. Invest in Your Vehicle's Future Regular maintenance isn't just about preventing breakdowns – it's about maximizing your transportation investment and ensuring reliable service for years to come. In Eureka's unique coastal environment, proper maintenance becomes even more critical for achieving maximum vehicle lifespan. Professional Maintenance in Eureka Ready to maximize your vehicle's lifespan with professional maintenance? The experienced technicians at Eureka Brake & Automotive understand the specific challenges that coastal driving presents and can develop a maintenance schedule tailored to your vehicle and driving patterns. From routine oil changes to comprehensive system services, we'll help you protect your investment and keep your vehicle running reliably for years to come. When the seasons change, it’s the perfect time to think about the air inside your vehicle. Your cabin air filter is what keeps dust, pollen, smoke, and other pollutants from blowing through your vents and into your lungs. Over time, it gets dirty and clogged—which means your heating and cooling system has to work harder, and the air you breathe isn’t as clean as it should be. At Eureka Brake & Automotive, we recommend replacing your cabin air filter regularly, and fall is the perfect time to do it. WHY FALL IS THE BEST TIME Allergies & Air Quality - With leaves on the ground, dust in the air, and wildfire smoke still a possibility, a fresh filter helps you and your passengers breathe easier. Preparing for Heater Season - You’ll be using your heater more in the colder months. A new cabin filter keeps the warm air flowing freely and helps your defroster work better. Health & Comfort- A clogged filter can trap moisture, leading to musty odors in your car. Replacing it keeps things smelling fresh. SIGNS YOUR CABIN AIR FILTER NEEDS REPLACING Reduced airflow from your vents Strange or musty odors when you turn on the heater or AC Increased allergy symptoms while driving Noise from your fan working harder than usual HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE IT? Most manufacturers recommend changing your cabin air filter every 12,000–15,000 miles , but it can vary depending on where and how you drive. If you’re often on dusty roads or in areas with poor air quality, you may need to replace it more often. KEEP YOUR AIR CLEAN WITH EUREKA BRAKE & AUTOMOTIVE Something as simple as a fresh cabin air filter can make a big difference in your driving comfort. If you’re not sure when yours was last replaced, let our team check it for you. Stop by Eureka Brake & Automotive this fall, and we’ll help keep your vehicle—and your lungs—happy. Schedule an appointment online or call us now at 707-443-2122! *Stay connected with us on social media for updates, tips, and special offers throughout the year. We love hearing from you and are always here to help with any automotive questions or needs you might have.

As the leaves begin to change and temperatures start to drop along the beautiful Humboldt County coast, it's time to prepare your vehicle for the fall season. While Northern California enjoys milder weather than many parts of the country, the transition from summer to fall still brings unique challenges for your car. From increased rainfall to cooler mornings, your vehicle needs special attention to stay reliable throughout the season. Why Fall Maintenance Matters in Eureka Living in Eureka means dealing with specific weather patterns that can affect your car's performance. The coastal climate brings increased moisture, morning fog, and the start of California's rainy season. These conditions can impact everything from your brakes to your battery, making fall the perfect time for a comprehensive vehicle check-up. Check Your Tires and Tread Inspect Tire Pressure and Condition Cooler temperatures cause tire pressure to drop, typically losing 1-2 PSI for every 10-degree temperature decrease. With Eureka's morning fog and occasional wet roads, proper tire pressure becomes even more critical for safe driving. Look for signs of uneven wear, cracks, or bulges in your tires. Check the tread depth using the penny test – insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln's head facing down. If you can see the top of his head, it's time for new tires. Consider All-Season Performance Northern California's fall brings a mix of dry days and sudden rain showers. Make sure your tires can handle both conditions effectively, especially if you travel Highway 101 or the winding roads around Humboldt Bay. Battery and Electrical System Test Battery Performance Cold mornings can strain an aging battery. Have your battery tested to ensure it's holding a proper charge. Look for corrosion around the terminals, which is common in coastal areas due to salt air exposure. Check Lights and Signals With shorter days ahead, your lights become more important. Test all headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals. Clean any foggy or dirty lenses to improve visibility during those foggy Eureka mornings. Brake System Inspection Fall is an excellent time to have your brakes checked, especially before the wet season arrives. Wet roads require reliable stopping power, and brake pads that were adequate during dry summer months might need attention. Listen for squealing or grinding noises when braking, and pay attention to how your car feels when you stop. If the brake pedal feels spongy or your car pulls to one side, don't wait to have it checked. Fluid Levels and Changes Engine Oil Summer driving can be tough on engine oil. Check your oil level and color – if it's dark and gritty, it's time for a change. Fresh oil helps your engine run smoothly during temperature fluctuations. Coolant System Even though Eureka doesn't experience extreme temperature swings, your cooling system still needs attention. Check coolant levels and have the system flushed if it's been over two years since the last service. Windshield Washer Fluid With fall comes more frequent windshield cleaning needs. Top off your washer fluid and consider switching to a formula that works better in cooler temperatures. Heating and Air Conditioning Before you need your heater on those chilly Humboldt County mornings, test it to make sure it's working properly. Check that air flows from all vents and that the temperature controls work correctly. Clean or replace your cabin air filter to ensure good air quality inside your vehicle, especially important during fire season or when driving through areas with poor air quality. Windshield Wipers and Visibility Replace Worn Wiper Blades California's rainy season is approaching, making good wipers essential. Replace blades that leave streaks, skip across the glass, or show signs of cracking. Quality wipers are crucial for safe driving on Highway 101 during sudden downpours. Clean Windows Inside and Out Remove summer's buildup of dust and grime from all windows. Clean glass improves visibility, which is especially important during foggy conditions common along the coast. Prepare an Emergency Kit Put together or refresh your emergency kit with items like: Jumper cables Emergency flares or reflectors First aid kit Water and snacks Blanket Phone charger Schedule Professional Inspection While you can handle many maintenance tasks yourself, some require professional attention. A comprehensive fall inspection can catch potential problems before they become expensive repairs or leave you stranded. Keep Your Car Running Strong This Fall Don't let seasonal changes catch you off guard. Taking care of these fall maintenance tasks now will help ensure your vehicle stays reliable throughout the season. Whether you're commuting to work in Arcata, taking a weekend trip to the Redwoods, or just running errands around town, a well-maintained car gives you peace of mind. Ready for Professional Fall Maintenance? If any of these maintenance tasks seem overwhelming, or if you've discovered issues that need professional attention, the experienced technicians at Eureka Brake & Automotive are here to help. From brake inspections to complete fall tune-ups, we'll make sure your vehicle is ready for whatever Northern California weather brings. Contact us at (707) 200-7097 or stop by our shop at 2002 2nd Street in Eureka to schedule your fall maintenance appointment today.
