Inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of his father and grandfather, Steve’s passion for cars and community began at a young age. In 1988, at just 23 years old, he turned that passion into reality by purchasing a modest two-bay shop on the corner of 2nd and U Street. Over the past three decades, that humble shop has grown into a bustling 12-bay facility, symbolizing dedication, quality, and community.
From Humble Beginnings to Industry Expertise
Steve’s journey in the automotive industry started as a teenager working in his parents’ shop, performing simple tasks like cleaning tools and floors. His dedication led him to become a certified technician and eventually a shop manager. With these skills, Steve founded Eureka Brake & Automotive, applying his technical expertise and business acumen to create a shop that set a standard for professionalism and care. This foundation continues to inspire the team today.
A Family Tradition: The Heart of Eureka Brake & Automotive
Since its inception, Eureka Brake & Automotive has been a family affair. Steve and Lacee Cunningham, who married in 1990, worked tirelessly to grow the business. Lacee’s expertise in operations and customer service complemented Steve’s technical background, creating a thriving family-owned enterprise. Their daughters were actively involved in the shop, learning the ropes of the family trade. In 2022, Steve and Lacee passed the torch to their daughter Mallory and her husband Shane Finley, ensuring the family legacy would continue. Mallory grew up immersed in the shop, working in the office after college. Today, she balances her role as a real estate agent with overseeing accounting and operations for the business. Shane, a former welder, transitioned seamlessly into managing the shop alongside Mallory. Together, they are raising their two children, Marley and Beau, while upholding the values of quality and community that define Eureka Brake & Automotive. Steve and Lacee remain connected to the business, occasionally visiting to share their wisdom and reconnect with the team.

Steve served as an advisor to the Eureka High School Automotive Department and a board member for the College of the Redwoods Automotive Department, while Lacee contributed to WECARE, a council promoting career opportunities in the field.
