Winter Safety Checklist

Driving in the winter can be challenging, here are a few things to be aware of.

  • Coolant levels; we tend to associate coolant with anti-freeze, but that liquid in your radiator is actually responsible for cooling down your heat-generating engine. Be careful not to let your coolant freeze in colder months, make sure to get your coolant levels checked and that it’s the correct ratio of water/coolant. Fun fact the “coolant” is also responsible for diverting heat from your engine into your cabin and warming your car.
  • Wipers and washer fluid; having a windshield you can see out of is always important, especially during the rainy months. Making sure your windshield washer reservoir is filled with fluid that is designed not to freeze in cooler weather is important. Special winter wiper blades can also be helpful for those living in cold climates, they are less likely to tear or wear too quickly from exposure to ice.
  • Tire pressure and tread; when the temperature plummets, so does the pressure in your tires! Make sure they are inflated to manufacturer’s specifications as well as any local regulations.
  • Proper engine oil; You’re probably aware of the different types of oil but most of us don’t know what they mean. The manufacturer has specified characteristics for your vehicle, having the correct oil protects your engine in cold conditions, on the other hand using the wrong oil specifications can damage your engine.
