Your engine needs clean air to operate efficiently. It takes about twelve thousand gallons of air to burn a gallon of gas in your engine. Clean air is much better than dirty air.
When your air filter is dirty, it simply can’t trap any more dirt, so the dirt just passes through into your air intake system. From there it can get into the engine combustion chamber. Burning dust and pollen in your engine does you no good.
Signs that your engine air filter needs to be replaced:
- A decrease in gas mileage. The engine requires good airflow to work properly. When the air filter is dirty, it’s harder to get the air in, and the engine has to work harder.
- Ignition problems. When your engine air filter is dirty, the air can’t get through the filter to the engine, which affects the entire emission control system of the car
- A simple visual inspection will tell you when you need a new engine air filter.
- Replacement time. Generally every 12,000 to 15,000. It depends on how dirty the air is where you drive. If your environment is sandy or dusty, your filter will likely need to be changed more often.
When you look at the air filter on your furnace at home and see that it is clogged with dust and dirt, you don’t hesitate to replace it. Do not wait until your air filter (furnace or automobile) is totally plugged – by that time you’ve been running inefficiently for a lot of miles.
