Be Alert When It Comes To Tire Safety

Visually inspecting your tires for excessive wear or damage and keeping them properly inflated is important for your safety and fuel efficiency. There is no substitute for regularly inspecting your tires and especially before a long trip.

Q. Why is proper tire inflation important?

A. Keeping your tires at the recommended pressure is essential for the safe, efficient operation of your vehicle. Dry and wet handling performance suffers with under-inflated tires. Under–inflated tires can lead to skidding and/or loss of control of your vehicle, hydroplaning on a wet surface, and blowouts caused by severe overheating. Properly inflated tires run cooler, last longer and have less rolling resistance, which helps maintain fuel economy.

Q. Why does tire pressure change?

A. There are several reasons why tire pressure may change:

  1. Tire Damage
  2. Slow Leaks
  3. For every drop of 10 degrees Fahrenheit in temperature, your tires lose 1 psi of pressure
  4. Tires also deflate naturally over time, as much as 1.5 psi per month. This time-frame can accelerate if there are heavy items in the trunk.
